Bart and Saskia contacted us late in 2017 to discuss their new home located in the farmlands of the eastern cape. We met with this wonderful couple early in 2018. The took us for a lovely drive through the farmlands to show us three potential sites but it was clear that there was only one site for this home.
The brief was simple. Modern home, completely off the grid with maximum, uninterrupted views.
Our design presented was a simple three bedroomed home with two bathrooms, open plan living areas and a covered braai area. The site and landscape would be left as natural as possible. Ceiling heights of 3230mm meant pushing the boundaries of glazed elements. Imported double glazed windows and doors were specified, maximising glass and minimizing frames. The open plan master suite was designed as a safe room with bullet proof windows and doors.
The house is raised above the landscape. The foundation excavations produced some aesthetically pleasing rock which we decided to reuse as feature walls on the southern side of the home.
The house runs on a photovoltaic system with a 5-day redundancy period. There is a silent backup generator to charge the batteries should this period not be sufficient. The house collects rainwater which is fed to the house via a pumped filtration system. Backup water can also be pumped to the house via a solar water pump from a near water source.
A neutral paint pallet will be used internally to compliment the engineered timber floors. Energy efficient appliances and water conscious sanitaryware have been specified.
This home is currently under construction and will be completed in 2012.
