Charles and Jane Ramsay approached us to turn their family beach shack into a home that would offer them a maintenance free, off the grid, easy living, lifestyle. The existing structures on site comprised of a 90m² main dwelling and 60m² annex and was situated on a sloped property. After the property was surveyed, we submitted our proposal. This consisted of enlarging the main dwelling but sticking to a one-bedroom layout and converting the annex into overflow accommodation. A single garage was added underneath the main dwelling. We would create a grass terrace over the roof of the garage. This would offer them some level ground to entertain and do their most favourite thing. Braai! Internally we made use of exposed brick, polished concrete floors, exposed rafters with poplar ceilings and the kitchen were designed and constructed out of laminated plywood. Neolith countertops were used to ensure that we have proper heat-resistant surfaces in the kitchen. All appliances and lighting were carefully selected to keep energy consumption to a minimum. The external appearance of the house was kept simple and functional. We made use of North lights to ensure that the home stays warm all round. Double glazing was added for solar control. The Photovoltaic system runs the entire home. The home uses water that is stored in an existing 60 000L reservoir. The grey water from the house is used to irrigate the lawn and gardens. The braai area features composite timber seating, stainless steel handrails and our signature keyhole firepit which allows them to braai and have a fire going at the same time. Permeable materials were used on all retaining walls and paved areas to allow the natural coastal vegetation to exist in harmony with the home. COMPLETED 2018
